Online Blackjack Terms

Like most things in life, it is important to grasp the terminology surrounding a particular subject, business or matter if you want to fully understand it. Online Blackjack is no different as it is a gambling game with a 'vocabulary' of its own.

We have put together a list of the most common online Blackjack terms which should get you talking 'Blackjack' in no time:

Ace - Aces have a value of one or eleven.

Blackjack - If your first two cards add up to 21, you have a Blackjack and get paid out 3:2.

Bust
- If your hand exceeds 21, you are bust. The same is applicable for the dealer.

Double Down - If you feel you will beat the dealer you can double down which is when you double your initial bet. Once you double down, you are only allowed to draw one additional card.

Draw - When you ask the dealer for another card, you 'draw' a card.

Face Card - Any card with a picture is called a face card. So Kings, Queens and Jacks are face cards and are each valued at ten.

Hard Hand - If you have a hand without an Ace or have an Ace but can only take it as a value of one, you have what is known as a hard hand.

Hit - This means the same as a Draw. You request the dealer to 'hit' you.

Hole Card - This is the card lying face down in the dealer's hand.

Insurance - You can take insurance out to protect you against the dealer getting a Blackjack. Insurance normally costs half of your initial bet.

Natural
- This means the same as a Blackjack.

Picture Card - This means the same as Face Card.

Press - When you are on a winning streak and increase your bet size, normally by doubling it on each hand.

Push - If you and the dealer have the same cards, neither of you wins and your initial bet is returned to you. This is known as a 'push'.

Soft Hand
- If you have a hand that contains an Ace that can be valued at one or eleven, you have a 'soft hand'.

Split - If you are dealt a pair in your first two cards, you can choose to 'split' them and play and bet each card separately.

Stand - If you are happy with your cards and do not want to be dealt additional cards, you 'stand'.

Stiff Hand - Any hand that has a value of between twelve and sixteen. In Blackjack, you want to try to avoid getting a 'stiff hand'.
