Blackjack History

It is believed that playing cards were invented almost one thousand years before the birth of Christ in China. In the 17th century, the 52-card deck became the standard in France and was subsequently adopted by countries all over the world as the playing cards we know today.

In terms of Blackjack history, the game originated in France in around 1700, and was known as 'vingt-et-un' or '21'. It is thought to have evolved from another popular card game of the day called 'chemin de fer'. A few decades later, it traveled over the Atlantic to the United States and other countries, where it remains as popular today as it was then.

Of course, with the introduction of the Internet, Blackjack has achieved a new level of popularity. Every day tens of thousands of avid online Blackjack players from all over the world play single and multi-player Blackjack though great online casinos such as 50 Stars Casino.

If you've ever heard the phrase 'card-counting', it comes from the game of Blackjack. For hundreds of years, Blackjack enthusiasts have tried different methods of 'beating the dealer' at Blackjack.

The first and probably most famous of these was Professor Edward O. Thorp. In 1962, Thorp published a book called, surprisingly enough, 'Beat the Dealer', which contained the first successful card counting techniques.

Unfortunately, card counting doesn't work in online casino Blackjack because Random Number Generation software has replaced physical cards but the thought of beating the dealer is still never far from a player's mind!
